Time, toothless and change

How is time going by so fast? Am I really paying as much attention as I can to these moments? I've just realized that my children's faces as I have come to know them, are changing. I'm not sure I am ready for this.

My oldest son just lost his fifth tooth the other night. This was a big one for me. It was one of his top two. He now has a gaping hole in the front of his mouth. He is very proud and excited about the childhood milestone. He's also adjusting to three holes in his mouth as the other most recent two teeth he lost are just starting to come in. I am remembering him when he was a big, healthy baby and he was just getting his front teeth. Although still cute as ever, he now looks like a "school-ager" or a defenseman for the Blackhawks.

My #2 son, decided that he just can't wait to have a loose tooth just like his big brother. He has been checking his teeth daily and after taking a huge bite out of a Fuji apple two days ago, he declared that he had a loose tooth! He almost retracted the statement but after having DaddyO wiggle it, it was clear he too is stepping into another stage of childhood. He has had his finger on that tooth every waking moment since.

And now, "the baby" or our 3 year old decided that he must have a loose tooth also, because #1 and #2 do. Ah sweetie, please don't age yourself yet. Buying you superhero big boy underpants today, was a big step for Mommy. We're just working on getting you potty trained. What ever will I do when there aren't any diapers in our house?

You'll enjoy the saved money when diapers are gone, trust me. But it's a bittersweet time too. My oldest is 9 and my best friend and I were reminiscing the other day on the phone "10 years ago I was pregnant, how did it fly by so fast?" And when she hit me with the "Just think Autumn in 4 more years she'll be 13 and in 9th grade" I about fell over. If 10 years from the time I found out I was going to have her to now has passed by so quickly 4 years will come and go before I know it! I'm so not ready for this!! Slow down babies I don't want you to grow up yet!!! :(
